Sodium acetate trihydrate is a compound with the chemical formula NaCH3COO.3H2O. It is a white, crystalline powder that is highly soluble in water. Sodium acetate trihydrate is the most common form of sodium acetate and is used in a wide range of applications.
One of the most notable properties of sodium acetate trihydrate is its ability to undergo a physical change known as "supercooling". This occurs when the compound is heated to a high temperature and then allowed to cool slowly. Under these conditions, the compound can remain in a liquid state even when it is below its freezing point. This property is used in hand warmers and other heat-pack products.
In addition to its use in heat packs, sodium acetate trihydrate is used in the food industry as a flavoring agent, in the manufacture of pharmaceuticals, and as a buffering agent in the production of photographic films. It is also used in the textile industry for dyeing and printing processes.
